Why you need to make this Easy Homemade Flat Bread

Simple Ingredients: This recipe uses pantry staples, making it convenient to whip up whenever you need.

Versatile: Flatbread can be used in many ways, from sandwiches to dipping, making it super versatile.

Homemade Goodness: There's nothing quite like the taste and texture of fresh, homemade bread.

    Ingredients

    • Bread flour: Provides the necessary gluten structure for a chewy and soft flatbread.
    • Water: Activates the yeast and hydrates the flour, forming the dough.
    • Caster sugar: Feeds the yeast and helps activate it.
    • Dry active yeast: Leavens the bread, making it rise and become fluffy.
    • Sea salt: Enhances the flavour of the bread.
    • Olive oil: Adds richness and helps to create a tender crumb.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Hint: Kneed the dough until it’s smooth and elastic; this ensures the right texture for the flatbread.

    Variations

Herb-Infused: Add chopped fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough for extra flavour.

Garlic Flatbread: Brush with garlic-infused butter after cooking for a tasty twist.

Whole Wheat: Substitute half of the bread flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier flatbread.

    Storage

Store leftover flatbread in an airtight container or a zip-lock bag at room temperature for up to two days. To reheat, warm in a dry pan over medium heat for a few minutes on each side. For longer storage, freeze the flatbread in a freezer-safe bag for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature before reheating in a pan or oven.

    Top tip

Cook the flatbread on high heat to get a nice, crispy exterior while keeping the inside soft.

    FAQ

Can I freeze the cooked flatbread? Yes, cooked flatbread can be frozen. Let it cool completely, then store in a freezer bag for up to three months.

    Ingredients

    • 300 g/2 cups bread flour
    • 200 ml water lukewarm
    • 3 g/1 tsp caster sugar
    • 3 g/1 tsp dry active yeast
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    Instructions

    • Add the water and sugar to a bowl and mix to allow most of the sugar to dissolve. Add the yeast and let sit for 10 minutes to activate the yeast. When it is is foamy the yeast is activated.
    • Add the flour and salt to the bowl and mix into a rough dough.
    • Kneed the dough until it is smooth and elastic. This will take 2 - 3 minutes in a stand mixer or 8 - 10 minutes kneading with your hands.
    • Line a bowl with olive oil, place the dough in the bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Leave someone warm for an hour to rise. It is ready when the dough has doubled in size.
    • On a flour dusted surface, divide dough into 4. Roll each piece into a flat round circle.
    • Bring a pan to high heat with a little bit of oil. Cook the bread on each side for about 2 - 3 minutes. Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Proper Kneading: Knead the dough until it’s smooth and elastic; this ensures the right texture for the flatbread.
    • High Heat: Cook the flatbread on high heat to get a nice, crispy exterior while keeping the inside soft.
