Ingredients for Teriyaki Tofu Fillets Recipe

You only need a few pantry staples to make this easy tofu recipe!

Teriyaki Tofu Fillets served on a bed of sautéed veggies and white rice
    • Firm tofu: The star of the dish, providing a hearty and protein-packed base for the teriyaki sauce.
    • Tamari/soy sauce: Infuses the tofu with savory umami flavor and adds depth to the teriyaki marinade.
    • Maple syrup: Balances out the salty tamari with a touch of sweetness, creating a perfect harmony of flavors.
    • Sesame oil: Adds a nutty aroma and depth of flavor to the marinade, enhancing the overall taste of the tofu.
    • Garlic powder: Provides aromatic notes and adds depth to the marinade.
    • Ginger: Freshly minced ginger adds a zingy kick and aromatic warmth to the teriyaki sauce.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions for Teriyaki Tofu Fillets Recipe

    1. Coconut aminos: Replace tamari or soy sauce with coconut aminos for a soy-free and gluten-free alternative.
    2. Agave nectar: Use agave nectar instead of maple syrup for a vegan-friendly sweetener option.
    3. Avocado oil: Swap sesame oil with avocado oil for a milder flavor profile, especially if you're sensitive to sesame.

    Variations

    1. picy Teriyaki Tofu: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or sriracha to the marinade for a spicy kick that elevates the flavor of the tofu.
    2. Citrusy Teriyaki Tofu: Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice into the marinade for a burst of citrusy freshness that brightens up the dish.
    3. Sesame-crusted Teriyaki Tofu: Roll the marinated tofu fillets in sesame seeds before baking for an extra layer of crunch and nuttiness.

    Storage

Store the baked tofu in the fridge for up to 3 - 4 days. Or freeze for up to 3 months.

    Top tip

For an extra burst of flavor, add a sprinkle of sesame seeds over the tofu fillets just before serving. The toasted sesame seeds not only add a delightful crunch but also enhance the overall presentation of the dish. Enjoy the added texture and flavor sensation with each bite of your delicious teriyaki tofu!

    FAQ

Can I grill the tofu instead of baking it?

Yes, you can grill the marinated tofu fillets on a preheated grill for a smoky flavor and charred exterior. Just make sure to oil the grill grates and cook until golden brown on both sides.

How long can I marinate the tofu?

Marinating the tofu for at least 30 minutes allows it to soak up the flavors, but you can also marinate it for up to 24 hours for a more intense flavor infusion.

Can I freeze leftover marinated tofu?

Yes, you can freeze marinated tofu for future use. Place the tofu fillets in a freezer-safe container or bag, ensuring they're well-sealed to prevent freezer burn. When ready to use, thaw the tofu in the refrigerator overnight before cooking as usual. Keep in mind that freezing may alter the texture slightly, but the flavor will remain intact.

Can I use another kind of tofu?

I only recommend using extra firm tofu, as most other types of tofu will be too soft to score like this. However you don't have to score the tofu like I have, so you can use any type of tofu you like and chop it into smaller cubes if you like.

One of my favourite ways to enjoy tofu is to serve it as a fillet because the sauce in the scored tofu helps the tofu absorb heaps of flavour! And its just a fun way to enjoy tofu!
I served mine with sautéed veggies and cashews, and a nice serving of white rice. So good! The perfect high protein recipe for a week night dinner or meal prep too.

You could also marinate the tofu for a few hours or overnight!
