Why you need to make your own Homemade Peanut Butter

Fresh and Natural: Making peanut butter at home ensures there are no unnecessary additives or preservatives.

Customisable: You can adjust the salt level or add sweeteners and other flavours to your liking.

Cost-Effective: Homemade peanut butter can be more economical than buying pre-made jars from the store.

    Ingredients

You only need 2 ingredients for this Homemade Peanut Butter

    • Peanuts: Blanched peanuts provide a creamy texture and rich flavour.
    • Sea salt flakes: Enhances the natural taste of the peanuts.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Hint: Ensure the peanuts are evenly spread on the baking tray to roast uniformly.

    Substitutions

Almonds instead of peanuts for almond butter.

Cashews for a sweeter, creamier nut butter.

Honey or maple syrup can be added for a touch of sweetness.

    Variations

Crunchy Peanut Butter: Add some chopped peanuts towards the end of blending for a crunchy texture.

Sweetened Peanut Butter: Blend in a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup.

Flavoured Peanut Butter: Add a pinch of cinnamon or a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

    Equipment

You will need a good high speed blender or food processor to make your own homemade peanut butter. I love my Optimum 9400 Froothie Blender. It was gifted to me 3 or 4 years ago and is super powerful and strong.

    Storage

Store in a sterilised jar. They do say that homemade peanut butter should be stored for up to a month in the fridge, so if you want to be safe do that. But I store mine in the pantry for months and don't have any issues at all.

    Top tip

Blending can take time; keep going until you reach your desired consistency.

    FAQ

Can I make this without a high-speed blender? A food processor works well, but it may take longer to achieve a smooth consistency.

Can I use raw peanuts instead of roasted? Some recipes say you can, but I have tried this before and failed miserably. Roasting the peanuts allows the oils to seperate which makes it a looot easier to blend. It will also have a much nicer flavour when roasted!

    Ingredients

    • 375 g peanuts blanched (aka skin removed)
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt flakes

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 150C.
    • Spread the peanuts over a baking tray and bake for 10 - 15 minutes, tossing halfway through. You want them to be super well roasted, but be very careful not to burn them! Roasting them releases all the oils, making the peanuts really easy to blend, so don't skip this step.
    • Allow the peanuts to cool for 10 minutes then transfer to a high speed blender or food processor and blend. Depending on your machine it could take anywhere between 5 minutes and 20 minutes for your peanuts to turn into peanut butter. Just keep blending and you'll be amazed at how they transform. Add the salt towards the end.
    • Transfer to a sterilised/freshly cleaned jar and enjoy!

    Notes

    • Roast Evenly: Ensure the peanuts are evenly spread on the baking tray to roast uniformly.
    • Be Patient: Blending can take time; keep going until you reach your desired consistency.
